Step 1: Understand how SEO works

To take advantage of the methods we’re about to show you, it’s important to first understand how SEO works. If you can get your head around how Google prioritizes one website over the other, you’ll better understand how to rank your website on Google.

To start off, you’ll want to know the different between onsite SEO and offsite SEO. Onsite SEO is the process of making your website search engine friendly. This will allow Google (and other search engines) to crawl your website and list it in their search results.

  • Create relevant content: If you’re not creating unique and valuable content, Google doesn’t care
  • Do your keyword research: Take your time and find keywords that are relevant, with low competition
  • Build quality backlinks: Don’t pay for dodgy backlinks, focus on quality
  • Make your meta description and title sing: This is a user’s first impression of your site. Make it count

Follow these basic steps whenever you’re creating content and they’re a sure fire way to boost your website up Google’s rankings.

Step 2: Study your competition

Once you know what the body of your article is going to focus on, you’ll need to start studying your competition.

This means creating a list of keywords that you’d like to include in your article and searching for those keywords in Google. What this will then do is give you a good idea of what others in the same space are doing. And more importantly, who’s doing it well.

If you have the budget to invest in a tool like Ahrefs, it will give you a huge advantage over your competition. By using their SERP tool, you can find out what keywords your competition are using and how much traffic they’re generating from those keywords.

Remember, to get ahead of your competition, you just need to replicate what they’re doing, only better. Study your competition and take note of the following things:

  • What are their focus keywords: You can do this manually or with a tool like Ahrefs. If you’re going at it manually, train your eyes to look for words that are repeated throughout the article
  • How is their content being structured: Focus on page titles. Do their titles contain the focus keywords? Roughly how many words is the content? Typically, with SEO, the longer the better
  • How captivating is the meta description: Is it descriptive? Could it be done better? Think about how you could make a better first impression and attract clicks away from their website

Researching your focus keywords is one of the key steps towards understanding how to get on the first page of Google in 24 hours. You’re going to want to focus on highly searched keywords, with low competition.

There are a number of free and paid tools you can use to help with your keyword research, including:

Each keyword tool will provide you with different insights. For this reason, you’ll want to use a blend of different tools to ensure you’re making data driven decisions.

When we’re doing our keyword research, we use a combination of Google keyword planner, ahrefs and uber suggest. This way, we can be confident that even if one tool paints a different picture than the other, we’ve covered all bases.

Step 4: Focus on longtail keywords

Before we started our keyword research, we decided that we were going to create an article that was focused on affiliate programs for beginners. You can find the article here.

To find our focus keyword, we used Google keyword planner, ahrefs and uber suggest. In our keyword research, we found that the keyword best affiliate program for beginners had roughly 1,000 – 10,000 searches per month over a 12 month period. Pretty solid numbers.

In saying that, Google keyword planner rated the keyword as having medium competition. Whilst Neil Patel’s uber suggest indicated the keyword SEO difficulty was easy, there was still a decent amount of competition. And much like anyone else who’s starting out, this website doesn’t have a high domain score so it would be hard to compete with the top ranking websites.

We realized that we needed to focus our efforts on longtail keywords. What we mean by that is looking at keywords such as: best travel affiliate programs for beginners or best affiliate programs for beginners to make passive income. You get the idea.

How longtail SEO works

What we found was that the keyword best affiliate program for beginners 2018 had between 50-70 searches per month on Google.

Our hypothesis was that if we wrote this article at the beginning of 2019, we could use the keyword best affiliate program for beginners 2019 and capitalize on similar traffic that the same keyword had in 2018. The only difference being that we were switching out 2018 to 2019.

What we’re doing here is looking at past trends to make data driven decisions. If you’re using Yoast, it will provide you with a number of recommendations to improve your overall SEO score. For those of your not using Yoast, these recommendations include adding:

  • Primary focus keyword in your first paragraph
  • Primary and secondary focus keywords in your H2 subheadings
  • Focus keywords within your alt tags
  • Outbound links within your content
  • Links to internal pages within your content
  • Primary and secondary keywords to your meta description
  • The focus keyword to your slug (article URL)

Step 6: Make your Page Title & Meta description shine

Now that we’ve covered off the technical steps, you’ll need to use your marketing skills to maximize search clicks.

Try to think of a captivating title that isn’t too long. Similarly, you’ll want to make sure your meta description is compelling, and includes your focus keywords.

You can experiment with what titles are best used to hook users to your article. You’ll then be able to monitor the number of impressions and click throughs to your article in Google’s search console. Try to aim for a click through rate (CTR) above 5%.

When our article appears in a Google search result, we try to hook the user with our title, which tells the user they’re going to read something about passive income through affiliate marketing. And we explain what they can expect to find if they click through to our article in the meta description.

Step 7: Don’t limit yourself to Google

Not many digital marketers follow this step, and if you do the same, you’re missing out on a big piece of the pie. According to recent data, Bing has a market share of 33% in the US. They also hold strong market share in other top tier countries.

Some popular SEO gurus also believe that whilst Bing has fewer users, they’re more engaged than Google users. To back this up, we found that our article had more impressions and clicks than it did on Google.

If you want your article to be found on Bing, Yahoo and MSN, you’ll need to upload your sitemap to to their webmaster platform.

Step 8: Review your results

After following these methods, almost immediately we saw a couple of clicks coming through from Google and Bing.

To our surprise, in only a few hours, our article had appeared on the first page of Google for the keyword best affiliate programs for beginners 2019.

As we started to see more clicks come through, our article ranked number 1 on Google for this keyword:

A few weeks on, we’re still seeing a decent number of clicks coming through from this keyword. We’re also ranking higher than much more established websites. This goes to show that if the content you’re creating is original and valuable to the user, Google will rank your site favorably.

After publishing your article, it may take a few days before the search engines robots crawl your site map and start to show your article in it’s results. To expedite this process, you can manually selecting inspect URL in Google’s Search Console. You can do the same in Bing’s webmaster tools, by clicking on submit URL’s.

Remember that if something doesn’t work, keep testing until it does. If your focus keyword isn’t ranking highly on Google, replace it with another and see what happens.
